Porvoon rautatieasema on rakennettu Keravalle kulkeneen yksityisradan pääteasemaksi. Asema-alue sijaitsee vanhojen Helsingin ja Hämeenlinnan maanteiden risteyksessä.

Uusrenessanssipiirteinen asemarakennus on järjestyksessään aseman toinen.

Porvoon asemarakennuksen suunnitteli arkkitehtitoimisto Björnberg-Aspelin 1895.

Taloudellisissa vaikeuksissa olevaa radan kannattavuutta rasitti sisävesiltä Lahden Vesijärven rannalta Loviisaan rakennetun radan valmistuminen 1900. Rata myytiin valtiolle 1917.

The building of a private railway and railway station in Porvoo reflects the efforts of the burghers of this coastal town to secure transport links and trade connections with the interior, at a time when rail traffic was developing and its importance as a mode of transport was growing.

The location of Porvoo railway station is scenically central, on the Porvoonjoki river, opposite Porvoo Linnanmäki and the old town. The station area is representative, and its present building stock dates mainly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Porvoo railway station was built as the terminus of a private railway that ran to Kerava. The station area lies at the junction of the old Helsinki and Hämeenlinna roads.

The neo-Renaissance-style station building is the station's second. It is a single-storey, clad log building with low wings at both ends. The station complex comprises, in addition to the station building, residential buildings by the river and a depot area on the other side of the station. The building stock includes the station master's house and two residential barracks with their outbuildings, as well as a goods storehouse and two locomotive sheds.

The construction permit for the private railway between Porvoo and Kerava was obtained in 1871, and a limited company was founded in 1872 to build it. The line was connected to the Helsinki-Hämeenlinna railway in 1875. The station building at Porvoo was designed in 1895 by the architectural office Björnberg-Aspelin.

The profitability of the railway, which was in financial difficulties, was burdened by inland waterway traffic and by the completion in 1900 of the line built from the shore of Lahden Vesijärvi to Loviisa. The railway was sold to the state in 1917. Passenger traffic on the railway was discontinued in 1981. The station building was restored in the 1990s for use by the Itä-Uudenmaan rakennustietokeskus.
