The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Hautausmaalla on kaksi kappelia, joista vanhempi edustaa 1920-luvun klassismia. Uuden hautausmaan siunauskappeli- ja krematoriorakennus on 1970-luvulta. Hautausmaan portin vieressä on puinen hautajaishuoneisto, 1880-luvulla rakennettu hautausmaan vahtitupa.

Hautausmaalle on haudattu lukuisia Oulun sivistys-, teollisuus- ja liike-elämään vaikuttaneita henkilöitä ja hautausmaalla on mm. kirkkomaalari Mikael Toppeliuksen, kirjailijoiden Teuvo Pakkalan, Tatu Vaaskiven ja Samuli Paulaharjun hautamuistomerkit. Sankaripatsas "Taistelu on päättynyt" vuodelta 1952 on Oskari Jauhiaisen tekemä. Alueella on myös Oulun diakonissakodin sisarten hauta-alue, jossa on Kalervo Kallion muistomerkki "Hoitavat Kädet" vuodelta 1959.

Oulussa päätettiin 1780 varata silloisen kaupungin ulkopuolelta alue hautausmaalle. Kajaanin tullin takaiselle pellolle perustettu hautausmaa vihittiin käyttöön 1782.

Hautausmaata laajennettiin 1818 ja 1850-luvulla. Jälkimmäisen laajennuksen yhteydessä sinne ryhdyttiin istuttamaan ensi kerran lehtipuita. Edelleen hautausmaata laajennettiin 1878 ja 1908. Hautauskappelia Intiöön ryhdyttiin hankkimaan 1908, mutta kappeli valmistui vasta 1923 lääninarkkitehti O.F. Holmin piirustusten mukaan. Kappelin paikalla sijaitsi aiemmin 1880-luvulla rakennettu hautausmaan vahtitupa. Kappelia laajennettiin 1985.

Oulu's park-like cemetery and its parts from different periods reflect not only changes in burial customs but also the aesthetic ideals of garden art and gravestone design. The parts of the cemetery created in different eras are distinguished from one another in terms of their surroundings and memorials.

The Oulu cemetery is located in the Intiö district close to Oulu's city centre and the cathedral. The oldest area of the cemetery, which has been extended on several occasions, forms its western part. The cemetery has two chapels, the older of which represents 1920s classicism. The blessing chapel and crematorium building of the new cemetery dates from the 1970s. Next to the cemetery gate there is a wooden funeral premises, and the cemetery watchman's cottage built in the 1880s.

Numerous people who influenced Oulu's education, industry and commerce have been buried in the cemetery, and among others it contains the memorials of church painter Mikael Toppelius and the writers Teuvo Pakkala, Tatu Vaaskivi and Samuli Paulaharju. The war hero statue "Taistelu on päättynyt" from 1952 was made by Oskari Jauhiainen. The area also contains the sisters' burial area of the Oulu Deaconess Home, where there is Kalervo Kallio's memorial "Hoitavat Kädet" from 1959.

In 1780 Oulu decided to set aside an area outside the then town for a cemetery. Because of the size of the town, a separate cemetery area was essential, especially as it was wished to stop burying people in the stone church completed in the 1770s and its small churchyard. The cemetery, established on a field behind the Kajaani customs house, was consecrated for use in 1782.

The cemetery was extended in 1818 and in the 1850s. In connection with the latter extension, deciduous trees were planted there for the first time. The cemetery was further extended in 1878 and 1908. Work to acquire a burial chapel in Intiö began in 1908, but the chapel was only completed in 1923 to the drawings of provincial architect O.F. Holm. The chapel's site was previously occupied by the cemetery watchman's cottage built in the 1880s. The chapel was extended in 1985. A new chapel and crematorium were completed in 1973, designed by architect Seppo Valjus, in the new area of the cemetery.

Construction of the stone wall surrounding the cemetery began in 1820 and has been continued in connection with the area extensions. In the 1920s the main gate was moved from the south-western corner of the area to its present location along Kajaanintie, due to the construction of a railway underpass.
