The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Imatrankosken ympärille varhain muodostunut matkailu ja Vuoksen varrelle keskittynyt teollisuus asuma-alueineen ovat jättäneet jälkensä Imatrankosken alueen kulttuurimaisemaan. Imatrankoski on merkittävä maisemanähtävyys, joka on eri aikoina houkutellut taiteilijoita. Imatrankosken valjastaminen sähköenergian tuotantoon ja siihen liittynyt voimansiirtoverkon luominen on ollut valtion johtama suurhanke 1920-luvun vilkkaan voimalaitosrakentamisen kaudella.

Imatrankosken matkailuun liittyneet vanhimmat rakennukset ovat hävinneet, mutta Imatran Valtionhotellin kansallisromanttinen, Usko Nyströmin suunnittelema kivilinna vuodelta 1903 tarjoaa restauroituna edelleen palveluja matkustaville.

Imatrankosken partaita on jo varhain hoidettu puistomaisesti. Kosken rantoja myötäilevän vanhan Kruununpuiston alueella on käytäviä ja levähdyspaikkoja.

Koski on kahlittu 1920-luvulla johtamalla koskiuoman vesi voimalaitoksen kanavaan. Punatiilinen voimalaitos kytkinasemineen on yhä maamme suurin vesivoimalaitos.

Kruununpuistoksi kosken ranta-alue muodostettiin 1842.

Matkailu Imatralle lisääntyi 1870 avatun Riihimäki-Pietari rautatieyhteyden ja osin Saimaan kanavaa kulkeneen Viipuri-Rättijärvi-Imatra höyrylaiva-hevosdiligenssiliikenteen alkamisen jälkeen. Kruununpuistoon 1846 valmistunut majatalo joutui luovuttamaan 1800-luvun lopulla paikkansa nykyisen Valtionhotellin paikalla sijainneille kahdelle hotellille.

Tourism that developed early around Imatrankoski, together with industry concentrated along the Vuoksi and its workers' settlements, has left its mark on the cultural landscape of the Imatrankoski area. Imatrankoski is a notable scenic attraction that has attracted artists at various times. The harnessing of Imatrankoski for the production of electricity, and the associated creation of a power transmission network, was a state-led large-scale project during the lively power plant construction period of the 1920s.

The oldest buildings associated with tourism at Imatrankoski have disappeared, but the National Romantic stone castle designed by Usko Nyström in 1903, Imatran Valtionhotelli, continues to offer services to travellers after restoration.

The banks of Imatrankoski were laid out as a park from an early stage. In the old Kruununpuisto area, which follows the shores of the rapids, there are walkways and resting places.

The rapids were tamed in the 1920s by diverting the water of the rapids channel into the power plant's canal. The red-brick power station with its switchyard is still the largest hydroelectric power plant in our country. The power station building and the regulation dam, clad in grey granite, form a unique and impressive ensemble beside the river channel. The power station bridge has been given the same classicist appearance as the power station itself.

Imatrankoski is a nationally valuable scenic attraction, and the area, together with Kruununpuisto, is one of our national landscapes.

The Vuoksi, which flows from Saimaa to Ladoga, formed after the Ice Age. As a reminder of how the outflow channel took shape through the Salpausselkä, Voimalaitoksenniemi in Imatra still has giant's kettles and the rounded stones of a wide, shallow rapids that once flowed here.

Travellers came to Imatrankoski as early as the end of the 18th century, and at the end of the 19th century the rapids attracted many tourists. It was once the most notable natural sight in our country. The riverbank area was made into Kruununpuisto in 1842.

Tourism to Imatra increased after the opening of the Riihimäki-Pietari railway connection in 1870 and the start of the Viipuri-Rättijärvi-Imatra steamboat and horse-drawn diligence service, which partly ran along the Saimaa Canal. The inn completed in Kruununpuisto in 1846 had to give way at the end of the 19th century to two hotels that stood on the site of the present Valtionhotelli. The hotels burned at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the present hotel building was completed in 1903.

Plans to harness the Imatrankoski rapids for energy production were considered for a long time, and the plans that led to the construction of the power station were set in motion in 1921. The first construction phase was carried out in 1922-1929, based on the plans of the architects Oiva and Kauno S. Kallio, who won an architectural competition. The Imatra power station met the demand for electricity for a long time, and after its completion, power station construction in the country decreased considerably. Imatran Voima Osakeyhtiö was founded in 1932. The company has expanded the power station and its machinery on several occasions, including to meet the needs of nearby industrial plants.
