Kuvaus
Imatran Voiman ja Kuparin asuntoalueet ovat korkeatasoinen esimerkki teollisuuden pyrkimyksestä kohottaa työväestön asuinoloja. Tyyppitaloilla on arkkitehtuurihistoriallista merkitystä.
Imatran Voiman vanhin asuntoalue on peräisin 1920-luvulta, jolloin voimayhtiön työntekijöille rakennettiin rakennusmestari Emil Ekegrenin suunnittelemat kymmenen aumakattoista asuinrakennusta ja perheiden yhteiset talousrakennukset. Työväen asuntoalueen vieressä, Vuoksen rannalla, on johdon asunnoksi samaan aikaan valmistunut Villa Malmi. 1950-luvulla aluetta on laajennettu arkkitehti Aarne Ervin suunnittelemilla puisilla satulakattoisilla ja vaakavuoratuilla kahdelle perheelle mitoitetuilla tyyppitaloilla. Tähän ns. Uuteen asuinalueeseen kuuluu lisäksi kaksi yhdenperheen omakotitaloa ja yhteinen talousrakennus.
Imatran Voiman asuntoalueen kaakkoispuolella on ns. Kuparin alue, jonka asuinrakennuskanta on kuparitehtaan aikainen. Se muodostuu 28 puisesta lomalaudoitetusta aumakattoisesta asuinrakennuksesta, joiden kulmauksissa on sisäänvedetty kuisti sekä viidestä säterikattoisesta, rapatusta kaksikerroksisesta talosta. Kivirakennukset ovat arkkitehti W.G. Palmqvistin suunnittelemat.
Kuparin asuntoalueeseen liittyvät lisäksi 1934 valmistuneet Outokumpu Oy:n kerho- ja juhlatalo Honkapirtti, arkkitehti W.G. Palmqvistin suunnittelema tehtaan johtajan asuinrakennus sekä kuparitehtaan rakennuskannasta säilyneet entinen paloasema, konttori ja sosiaalirakennus.
Historia
Imatrankosken 1928 valmistuneen voimalaitoksen (vuodesta 1932 Imatran Voima Oy) työntekijöille tarkoitetun asuntoalueen vanhin osa valmistui 1921. 1950-luvulla Imatran Voiman asuntoaluetta laajennettiin toimihenkilöille tarkoitetuilla asunnoilla.
Vesivoimalaitos mahdollisti teollisuuden voimantarpeen saannin ja veti teollisuutta alueelle. Outokummun kuparin teollisuuslaitokset, kuparisulatto ja rikkidioksiditehdas perustettiin Imatralle 1933. Rakennustyöt tehtiin 1934-1936. Kuparin asuinalueen rakentaminen alkoi samaan aikaan teollisuuslaitosten kanssa. Outokummun tehdas siirrettiin jatkosodan loppuvaiheessa 1944 kauemmas rajasta, Harjavaltaan. Outokummun entiselle paikalle sijoitettiin 1945 Enso Gutzeitin kemian tehtaat. Tehdas suljettiin 1989.

Description
The housing areas of Imatran Voima and Kupari are a high-quality example of industry's aspiration to improve the housing conditions of its workers. The standard houses are of architectural-historical significance.
The oldest housing area of Imatran Voima dates from the 1920s, when ten hip-roofed residential buildings designed by master builder Emil Ekegren, together with the families' shared outbuildings, were built for the power company's employees. Beside the workers' housing area, on the shore of the Vuoksi, stands Villa Malmi, completed at the same time as a residence for management. In the 1950s the area was extended with wooden gabled, horizontally boarded standard houses for two families, designed by architect Aarne Erv. This so-called New Housing Area also includes two detached single-family houses and a shared outbuilding.
South-east of the Imatran Voima housing area lies the so-called Kupari area, whose residential building stock dates from the copper works period. It consists of 28 wooden, rebated-board, hip-roofed residential buildings, with recessed porches at the corners, and five hipped-roof, rendered two-storey houses. The stone buildings were designed by architect W.G. Palmqvist.
The Kupari housing area is also associated with the Honkapirtti club and function building of Outokumpu Oy, completed in 1934, the residence of the factory director designed by architect W.G. Palmqvist, and the surviving buildings of the copper works' building stock: the former fire station, office and social building.
History
The oldest part of the housing area built for the employees of the Imatrankoski power station (Imatran Voima Oy from 1932), completed in 1928, was finished in 1921. In the 1950s the Imatran Voima housing area was extended with dwellings for white-collar staff.
The hydroelectric power station made it possible to obtain the electricity needed by industry and attracted industry to the area. The Outokumpu copper industrial plants, a copper smelter and a sulphur dioxide plant were established at Imatra in 1933. Construction work was carried out in 1934-1936. The building of the copper housing area began at the same time as the industrial plants. In the final phase of the Continuation War in 1944 the Outokumpu factory was moved further from the border, to Harjavalta. In 1945 the Enso Gutzeit chemical plants were placed on the former site of Outokumpu. The factory was closed in 1989.
