Kuvaus
Suur-Jämsän kirkonseudun vanhin säilynyt rakennettu ympäristö sijoittuu Jämsänjoen molemmin puolin kirkon kohdalle. Joen länsirantaa seurailevan vanhan maantien, Pääskyläntien, varrella on avoimessa peltomaisemassa säilynyt vanhoja kantatiloja kuten Hinkkala ja Simolat vanhoine rakennuksineen sekä kirkonkylävaiheesta periytyviä yksittäisiä asuintaloja. Vastapäinen ranta avautuu laajana puistona, jonka keskipisteenä on maisemallisesti erittäin vaikuttava, suuren kupolin kattama kirkko. Kirkkoherranpappila puistoineen on osa kirkkomaisemaa. Kirkonympäristö ja länsirannan vanha asutus peltoineen luovat tärkeän maisemallisen painopisteen tiiviiseen ja uuteen keskustarakentamiseen.
Vaaleaksi rapatussa tiilikirkossa on suuri keskikupoli avonaisine lanterniineineen, ristivarsien päädyissä on niitä jäsennöivät matalaprofiiliset pilasterit. Kirkossa olevan museohuoneen esineistöön kuuluu mm. keskiaikainen Neitsyt Maria -aiheinen alttarikaappi.
Kirkon luona oleva uusklassillinen kellotapuli on rakennettu 1857 intendentinkonttorissa jo 1838 laaditun piirustuksen mukaan. Se noudattaa yleisjäsentelyltään C.L. Engelin piirtämää Hollolan kellotapulia.
Historia
Päijänteeseen laskeva Jämsänjokilaakso muodosti laajan Suur-Jämsänä tunnetun pitäjän keskuksen jo varhain. Suur-Jämsä käsitti Jämsän, Jämsänkosken, Korpilahden, Koskenpään, Muuramen, Petäjäveden ja Säynätsalon. Jämsän seurakunta mainitaan asiakirjoissa ensimmäisen kerran keskiajan loppupuolella.
Kirkko rakennettiin vuonna 1929 neljä vuotta aikaisemmin tulipalossa tuhoutuneen kirkon paikalle.

Description
The oldest surviving built environment of the Suur-Jämsä church village is located on both banks of the Jämsänjoki, at the church. Along the western bank of the river runs the old road, Pääskyläntie, where old main farms such as Hinkkala and Simolat, with their old buildings, have survived in the open field landscape, along with individual residential houses dating from the church village phase. The opposite bank opens into a wide park, at the centre of which stands the church, a visually very impressive building crowned by a large dome. The vicar's parsonage, with its park, is part of the church landscape. The church setting and the old settlement on the western bank, with its fields, create an important visual focal point for dense and new town-centre development.
In the light-rendered brick church, a large central dome with open lanterns rises above the nave, and at the ends of the cross arms are low-profile pilasters that articulate it. The dome also dominates the austerely designed church interior. The pulpit, altar screen and chancel screen are typical elements of 1920s classicism. The two-part altarpiece, whose upper painting depicts the Transfiguration of Christ and whose lower one depicts the Holy Communion, dates from 1848 and was painted by Berndt Godenhjelm. The objects in the church's museum room include, among others, a medieval altar cupboard with a Neitsyt Maria theme.
The neoclassical bell tower beside the church was built in 1857, to a drawing prepared as early as 1838 in the Intendant's Office. In its general layout it follows the bell tower of Hollola drawn by C.L. Engel.
History
The Jämsänjoki valley, which drains into Päijänne, was early on the centre of a large parish known as Suur-Jämsä. Suur-Jämsä comprised Jämsä, Jämsänkoski, Korpilahti, Koskenpää, Muurame, Petäjävesi and Säynätsalo. The parish of Jämsä is first mentioned in documents in the late Middle Ages.
The church was built in 1929 on the site of a church that had been destroyed by fire four years earlier. Its design was decided by an invited competition between three architects: Alvar Aalto, Armas Lindgren and Kauno S. Kallio. The church was built to the proposal of architect Kallio and, in accordance with the parish's wishes, follows the general form of the previous wooden cruciform church with internal chamfers, built in the 1820s, adapted to the classicism of the 1920s.
