Vapaaherra Gustaf Wreden perustama Varkauden järvimalmiruukki aloitti toimintansa 1800-luvun alussa. Konepaja ja valimo käynnistyivät 1852 ruukin tultua kauppaliike Paul Wahl & Co:n omistukseen. Ruukin toiminta päättyi 1909, ja alue siirtyi A. Ahlström Oy:lle. Yhtiön myötä tuotantosuunta vaihtui puunjalostusteollisuudeksi. Enso-Gutzeitin (Stora Enso Oyj) omistuksessa tehtaat ovat olleet vuodesta 1986 lähtien.

Varkauden tehtaiden suunnittelijoina on ollut perustamisesta lähtien maamme teollisuusrakentamisen tunnetuimmat arkkitehdit: varhaisvaiheessa Karl Lindahl, Valter ja Ivar Thomé ja myöhemmin Alvar Aalto, Gunnar Aspelin, Erkki Kairamo (Arkkitehtitoimisto Gullichsen, Kairamo, Vormala) ja Keijo Ström (K. Ström & O. Tuomisto).

The formation of the Varkaus industrial area and of the whole settlement is linked above all to the strong rise of Finland's wood-processing industry at the beginning of the 20th century. The industry gave rise to a community around it, with its hierarchical residential areas, church, parks and service facilities.

The core of the factory area is the power canal and, beside it, the production plants built in the 1910s that belong to the first phase of the mill. Among these, as memorials to the sulphite cellulose production that has already ended, are the cellulose digester house and the acid towers. Further inside lies, among others, the former house factory, which produced prefabricated house series designed by Alvar Aalto. The mill has undergone significant extensions dictated by changes in production, especially in the 1950s and 1980s. The new paper mill completed in 1978, with its finishing department, is one of the best-known works of modern industrial architecture and a landmark central to the cityscape of Varkaus.

The lake-ore ironworks at Varkaus, founded by Baron Gustaf Wrede, began operating at the beginning of the 19th century. The machine workshop and foundry started in 1852, when the ironworks came under the ownership of the trading house Paul Wahl & Co. Operations at the ironworks ended in 1909, and the area passed to A. Ahlström Oy. With the company, production shifted to the wood-processing industry. The factories have been owned by Enso-Gutzeit (Stora Enso Oyj) since 1986.

Since the founding, the most renowned architects of industrial construction in our country have designed the Varkaus factories: in the early period Karl Lindahl, Valter and Ivar Thomé, and later Alvar Aalto, Gunnar Aspelin, Erkki Kairamo (Arkkitehtitoimisto Gullichsen, Kairamo, Vormala) and Keijo Ström (K. Ström & O. Tuomisto).
