Cantilevered aluminum-clad solariums, pre-cast concrete ribs, horizontal and double-hung aluminum windows, and paired glass-and-steel doors mark the exterior. A 1977 west wing designed by Echols-Sparger & Associates and an extended surgical wing were followed by a 1979 south wing and 2007 canopies.
Historical context
Local support for a new hospital grew from 1960, and Henderson P. Graham became its first board president in 1961. The project was fully funded by mid-March 1965, ground broke that April, and the hospital was dedicated on September 28, 1967. Racial integration of Smyth County schools began in 1965; Evelyn Lawrence became the board's first black member in 1979, and the hospital closed in 2006.
