Beaver Falls Grange Hall No. 554 is a Grange hall built in 1892 at 9577 Main St. in Beaver Falls, Lewis County. It was listed in the National Register in 2015.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C, with local-level significance in social history, agriculture and architecture; the nomination gives its period of significance as 1892 to 1965, reflecting the hall's 1892 construction.
Physical character
The building has a fieldstone foundation, narrow clapboard siding, and a narrow brick chimney on the east elevation. In 1914 the building was altered for a general store, and in 1915 shop windows and a recessed door were added to the facade. A meat market opened in the basement in 1923, and in 2008 community members repainted the exterior and rebuilt the first-floor windows and porch.
Historical context
The Beaver Falls Grange was organized on June 28, 1888, and a committee began planning the hall in March 1891. The Grange hosted the Lewis County Council in 1893 and applied for Pomona Grange certification in 1895. In 1940 Juvenile Grange No. 479 was organized and met on the gallery floor of the hall.
