The Security Storage and Safe Deposit Company Warehouse is a four-story warehouse at 517-523 Front St. in Norfolk (Independent City), built in 1916 in the Commercial style with Art Deco and Cubist detailing, designed by Neff & Thompson and built by R.R. Richardson & Co., Inc.
Why it's listed
It was listed in the National Register in 2014 under criteria A and C, with local significance in architecture and commerce; its period of significance runs from 1916, when it was built, to 1948, by which time window sash had been removed and openings partly infilled with concrete block.
Physical character
The warehouse has a poured concrete foundation, walls of brick, concrete block and stucco, and a pedimented entry with a three-layer stepped pediment, pointed arch and stylized diamond insets. The partly infilled window openings were completely filled with masonry in the 1960s and partly reopened in the 2000s.
Historical context
It served as secure storage for a variety of goods through its period of significance, with tenants including Libby, McNeill & Libby from 1925 to 1928, Jones Warehouse Company in 1937, and Sears, Roebuck and Company under a ten-year lease beginning in 1941. In 1975 it was vacant.
