Second Baptist Church is a church building at 407 Saunders St. in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, built c. 1856-1857 and listed in the National Register in 2014.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criterion A, with local significance in religion and social history. Its significance runs from 1864 to 1964, beginning with the 1864 deeding of the lot for a school for Black pupils, with worship as a second use.
Physical character
A gable roof with asphalt shingles tops wood clapboard walls, and the windows are two-over-two double-hung wood windows. In 1914 the church was enlarged with a south addition and basement and set on a tile block foundation, and in 1995 glass doors replaced its wood double doors.
Historical context
Second Baptist Church was organized in July 1863, and Joel and Jane Bass sold the property to First Baptist Church in 1864. From 1864 to 1867 the building served as a school for Black children and secondarily as a church. Second Baptist Church used it until moving to N. Grand Avenue in 2009, and the building was donated to the City of Mount Pleasant in 2013.
