The Frank and Amelia Jones House is an early twentieth-century adobe dwelling at 18000 Castillo Rd. in La Mesa, Dona Ana County, built around 1904.
Why it's listed
It was listed in the National Register in 2014 under criterion C, with local-level significance in architecture, reflecting its construction about 1904.
Physical character
The house has adobe walls on a stone and lava-rock foundation, a corrugated tin roof, and interior trim of bead board and fir, with four-paneled and six-paneled doors and two-over-two windows. A ghost mark on the exterior shows where a second door was enclosed around 1940, and around 1998 the owners added a sun porch and expanded the well house, additions that nearly doubled the size of the house.
Historical context
Frank Jones was farming his own land in La Mesa by 1910, after Adamirom Stewart deeded 516 acres with water rights to Amelia Jones in 1902. Felix Martinez deeded the land to Matias P. Hernandez in 1920, and Hernandez owned the house until his death in 1948.
