The Gallagher Building is a four-story, L-shaped commercial building at 23 N. Hazel and 131 Commerce Streets in Youngstown, Mahoning County, designed by Owsley and Boucherle and built in 1904 in the Commercial Style. It was listed in the National Register in 2014.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C, with local-level significance in commerce, architecture and European ethnic heritage. Its period of significance runs from 1904, when it was built, to 1920, when the Strouss-Hirshberg Company took occupancy of the entire building.
Physical character
The walls are red wire-cut brick laid in American common bond, trimmed with rock-faced sandstone lintels and a sandstone cornice over limestone and terra cotta foundations. In 1995 the first story gained a new steel door and a four-light horizontal window, and the basement staircase was moved to the east wall.
Historical context
John Gallagher, who had immigrated to Youngstown in 1864, opened his wholesale liquor business in 1870 and ran it from this building from 1904 until Prohibition closed it in 1920. The storefronts stood vacant from 1927 to 1931, later served as restaurants and, by the 1960s, an old man's bar.
