The Downtown Troy Historic District is a 9.3-acre commercial and civic district in Troy, bounded by Annie Avenue, 2nd, Marble and Court Streets, and was listed in the National Register in 2013. Its 39 contributing buildings, a site and two structures date as far back as 1830, in styles that include Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Classical Revival and Art Deco.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A, B, C and D, with local-level significance in architecture and commerce. Its period of significance runs from 1832, the year one of its buildings was constructed, to 1966.
Physical character
The district's buildings are mostly brick, laid in common bond or faced in glazed white or buff brick, on foundations of poured concrete or limestone. Cast iron storefronts, decorative cornices and terracotta trim such as a band with egg-and-dart detailing appear on several buildings. Later changes include storefronts updated with glass and aluminum around 1980, a single-light door with diamond tracery added around 1975, and facades resurfaced in synthetic siding around 2000.
Historical context
Fires destroyed two commercial buildings at Main and East Cherry streets in 1905, and much of the west side of Main Street burned and was rebuilt in 1928. The People's Bank closed in 1930 and the Farmers and Merchants Bank closed in 1931. Bodine Aluminum opened in Troy in 1912, produced casings for aircraft during the 1940s, and was purchased by Toyota in 1990.
