The Eagles Building is a Classical Revival building at 404 S West Temple St. in Salt Lake City, built in 1916. The nomination names Neil Edward Liljenberg as architect and O. Chytrous as builder.
Why it's listed
It was listed in 2019 under criteria A and C, with local significance in architecture and social history. Its significance runs from 1916, when it was built, to 1938, when it was sold to Utah Savings and Trust Co.
Physical character
The brick walls carry decorative brickwork and cast terra cotta bands, under an overhanging cornice and a flat roof with a simple parapet. A new elevator and stair tower was added near the southeast corner in 2018, and a non-original steel balcony and stair were added in the 1990s.
Historical context
The Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #67, was associated with the building, which served as a fraternal clubhouse. American Legion Post No.2 leased it in 1941 as a meeting and social hall, and Equitable Life & Casualty occupied it from 1950 to 1983. The Bay Entertainment Company bought it in 1991 and remodeled it in 1992; it was rehabilitated for a restaurant and bar in 2017 and was a restaurant when listed.
