The Oklahoma City Board of Education hired Layton and Smith, Solomon Andrew Layton's firm, to design the building in 1918, and a 1928 addition was designed by architect Guy C. Reid. The school district moved out in 1950, and the Opportunities Industrialization Center owned the building from 1974 to 2013, when it was sold to Walnut Partners, LLC. Walnut 1919, LLC bought it in 2018 to convert it into law offices for Ryan Whaley Coldiron Jantzen Peters & Webber.
