St. James' Episcopal Church is a religious building at 302 and 308 West Ave. in Cedartown, Polk County. It was built in 1883 in the Carpenter Gothic style, and its parish house, a Queen Anne cottage, was built around 1895. It was listed in the National Register in 2019.
Why it's listed
It was listed under Criterion C and Criteria Consideration A, with local-level significance in architecture. Its period of significance runs from 1883, when the church was completed and named St. James', to 1964, when the parish house was acquired by the church.
Physical character
The church has weatherboard walls on a brick foundation, a steeply pitched roof, and a steeple topped with a Latin cross. The parish house gained a northwest corner room between 1895 and 1900, and a former military barracks was moved onto the property in the 1940s as the parish hall.
Historical context
Amos G. West, who founded the Cherokee Iron Works in Cedartown in 1873, named the church for his wife's home parish when it was completed in 1883. West's heirs deeded the property to the Diocese of Georgia in 1892, the year he died, and the diocese split in 1907, placing St. James' under the Diocese of Atlanta.
