A front porch with chamfered columns and scroll brackets was added in the Italianate style around 1875, along with a rear ell. Around 1920 a concrete-block smoke and well house was added, and indoor plumbing followed around 1940.
Historical context
The house was built around 1850 as part of Roberts Settlement, whose original 960 acres were owned by African American settlers beginning in 1837 and which grew to more than 400 residents by the 1880s. Walden sold parcels of the farm in 1869 and sold the farmstead, including the house, to Albert Langolf in 1874 for $2200. Lizzie Langolf, who married Daniel Stroud in 1904, farmed the property in the 1920s after returning to her parents' home by 1910.
