The American National Bank of Amarillo and SPS Tower is an office tower at 600 S. Tyler St. in Amarillo, Potter County, built from 1968 to 1971 in the New Formalism style by Kelley Marshall and Associates and Wilson Doche Architects.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C, with local-level significance in architecture and community planning and development; its period of significance runs from 1968 to 1971.
Physical character
The tower rises more than 400 feet in a tower-on-podium composition, with six piers twelve feet in diameter and enclosed parking at the base. It is built of reinforced concrete and glass curtain wall, with a concrete-clad elevator tower and a two-story penthouse topped by a pronounced cornice.
Historical context
American National Bank of Amarillo began buying property in 1968, and after a 1969 demolition cleared the site, construction began that December. The bank moved into its new headquarters on November 15, 1971, and Southwestern Public Service took the tower's 21st through 29th floors that October. Southwestern Public Service and Xcel Energy kept offices in the tower from 1971 to 2017, when Xcel vacated for a facility on Buchanan Street, and Chase Bank left the first floor branch in 2018.
