The Lookout Mountain Hotel is a hotel building at 14049 Scenic Hwy. in Lookout Mountain, Dade County, built between 1927 and 1928 in the Tudor Revival style. Reuben Harrison Hunt, of the firm R. H. Hunt and Co., was the architect, and Hal Underwood's Underwood Contracting Corporation was the builder.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C in 2019, with local-level significance in entertainment and recreation and architecture. Its period of significance runs from 1928, when the hotel's construction was completed, to 1960, when hotel operations ended.
Physical character
The building has a stone foundation, stucco and masonry-veneered walls, a terra cotta Ludowici tile roof, and a cast-in-place reinforced concrete frame. Tudor Revival features include imitation half-timbering, a porte-cochère, a loggia, and a ten-story tower that originally had crenellations, removed along with its copper lantern in the 1980s when an exterior insulation finish system (EIFS) was applied over the stucco. The EIFS was removed in 2015, the roof replaced with matching Ludowici tiles, and the porches restored to open air in 2016.
Historical context
The hotel closed in 1931, ran seasonally in 1948, ended operations in 1960 leaving it furnished but vacant, and was bought by Covenant College in 1964.
