The Draft Horse Barn, Fergus County Fairgrounds is a building at 1000 US 191 in Lewistown, Fergus County, built in 1917 in the Neoclassical Revival style.
Why it's listed
It was listed in the National Register in 2017 under criteria A and C, with local significance in agriculture, architecture, commerce and entertainment/recreation.
Physical character
The gable-front barn has structural clay tile walls on a poured concrete foundation, under a corrugated sheet metal roof. Heavy corner pilasters, a semicircular parapet and a fanlight mark the building, which has sliding wood doors and four-light awning-style wood windows. The original roof was replaced in 1948, more stalls were added in 1962 for the growing number of 4-H horses, and a rehabilitation in 2012-2013 restored the building.
Historical context
The Fergus County Sales Corporation held its first sale in 1917, and the barn served for livestock exhibition and auction from 1917 to 2008. A draft horse show joined the fair program in 1978; in 1981 the barn was converted to house draft horses, and the Central Montana Harness Club renovated it. At the time of its listing it was fair-time exhibit space.
