The Fairport Public Library is a library building at 18 Perrin St. in Fairport, Monroe County, built in 1938 in the Georgian Revival style.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C, with local significance in architecture, art and education. Its significance runs from 1936 to 1967, reflecting the 1936 groundbreaking.
Physical character
The walls are cinder block faced with brick on a concrete foundation, and the entrance has a pedimented portico with Tuscan columns. A 1938 WPA mural by Carl W. Peters shows farmers, farm animals and the Erie Canal, and the circulation desk was removed in the 1970s.
Historical context
Architect Henry A. Martin was commissioned in 1930 to begin drawing plans, ground was broken in 1936, and the library opened in February 1938 as a WPA project. Villagers met in 1895 to establish the Fairport Public Library, which received a permanent charter in 1906. The library moved to larger quarters across the street in 1978, and in 1979 the Fairport School District gave the property to the Village of Fairport, which turned it over to the Perinton Historical Society. When listed, it was a museum.
