Physical character
The trapezoidal building has a reinforced concrete frame with steel floor beams, and brick walls rising to a cast stone parapet and cornice. Its main entrance is a deeply recessed, double-height opening framed by a segmental keystone arch and cast stone quoined surrounds. Drive-in loading docks, a metal roll-down gate and freight elevators served its warehouse operations, and interior floors are flat slab reinforced concrete carried on mushroom-shaped columns.
Historical context
Edson, Moore & Company was founded in Detroit in 1872, occupied the Palms Building from 1882 until it burned in 1893, then built this warehouse in 1913. In 1915 its lower level became a waiting room and concessions for an interurban railway station. It served as a warehouse and place of business, and was vacant when listed.
