The Woonsocket Senior High and Junior High Schools stand at 357 Park Place in Woonsocket, Providence County. The senior high school went up in 1915 and the junior high in 1927, in Classical Revival, Colonial Revival and Gothic Revival styles.
Why it's listed
It was listed in the National Register in 2017 under criteria A and C, with significance in education and architecture. Its significance runs from 1915 to 1967, reflecting the 1915 construction of the senior high school.
Physical character
The walls are brick over foundations of stone and poured concrete, with limestone and granite used as well. Inside are a central rotunda with oak decorative elements, white marble floors and wainscoting, and a 1,200-seat auditorium. A 12-room addition came in 1925, and in 1951-1952 the first senior high gym was torn down and a new gymnasium designed by Oliver Fontaine was added.
Historical context
The School Committee bought the Bouvier land for $20,000 in 1913, and the senior high school was dedicated in 1915. The school was Woonsocket's only public senior high school until 1972, then housed a junior high school to 1991 and a middle school from 1993 until it closed in 2009.
