The New England Emigrant Aid Company laid out Lawrence in 1854, and Amos A. Lawrence drew plans for a college on Mount Oread in 1856. Quantrill's raid on Lawrence came in 1863, and Central School was built at 9th and Kentucky Streets in 1865.
