The Uniontown Downtown Historic District (Boundary Increase) adds two buildings at 18 S. Beeson Blvd. and 9 E. Peter St. in Uniontown, Fayette County. The main building was built in 1924 in the Renaissance and Moderne styles, designed by T.G. Lehman.
Why it's listed
It was listed in the National Register in 2003 under criteria A and C and criteria consideration G, with local significance in architecture and commerce.
Physical character
Brick walls sit on a stone foundation, with terra cotta trim and coping. The gambrel roof is covered in asphalt, and the building has a chamfered corner. Windows include multi-light rolled steel sash and 1/1 wooden double-hung sash. Sears Roebuck and Company remodeled the store in 1934, and in 1956 an austere commercial-style addition went up on the north end along with an interior remodel.
Historical context
A 1922 fire cleared the block's western third, and the Fair Store built a new building there in 1924. A billiard parlor ran upstairs in the 1920s, and an A&P grocery occupied the ground floor in the 1930s. Sears bought the vacant building and reopened it in 1934, then planned an expansion of its Uniontown store in 1951. Sears moved its store out in the 1970s, and a consortium of Uniontown businessmen bought the building in 1975 and remodeled it into offices. The Laurel Business Institute bought the former Sears store in 1998 and used it as a school.
