Physical character
The brick building sits on a concrete foundation under an asphalt-covered gambrel roof, with parapeted gable ends, raised brick quoins, and an octagonal cupola capped by a goose-shaped weathervane. Ten square Doric pilasters and a pilastered surround with a broken ogee pediment and central urn frame the facade, and a 250-foot main hallway runs through the building. A west wing was added in 1936, and an L-shaped east wing followed in 1939, then a 1954 auditorium enlarged the gymnasium. Renovations in 1974 replaced the original sash with aluminum windows and doors and converted the gymnasium into a library.
Historical context
A fire destroyed Troy's previous school in 1922, and the new building opened as students marched in during 1924. The Troy Joint School District organized in 1949, and a new junior high school opened in 1964.
