The Ruffners

Grave of Joseph Ruffner, who bought site of Charleston from the Clendenins. His son, Daniel, built Holly Mansion on Kanawha Street in 1815. The Ruffners aided oil and gas development by improved drills used in salt wells.

1937 text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native and Black people, and tells frontier history from the settler's side.
