Fort Martin

Monongalia County · U. S. 19 north of Maidsville · location approximate

Fort Martin was built in 1769 by Colonel Charles Martin. Three settlers were killed and seven captured by Indians near the fort in 1779. At the Methodist Episcopal Church here Bishop Francis Asbury preached in 1784.

1937 text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native and Black people, and tells frontier history from the settler's side.
