Pownal was the site of one of the state’s oldest white settlement’s when Dutch settlers lived here for a short time after 1724. Up this valley came the pioneers from Connecticut including Ethan Allen, who led the dauntless Green Mountain Boys & Thomas Chittenden the first Governor of Vermont.
