Remember Baker

Prior to Vermont becoming a state, settlers holding land titles from New Hampshire conflicted with New York authorities who claimed the same lands. Remember Baker was one such settler, building a grist mill and homestead in East Arlington in 1764. A captain in the Green Mountain Boys, Baker defended settlers’ claims alongside his cousins Seth Warner and Ethan and Ira Allen. Arrest warrants were issued by New York and in an attack in East Arlington on March 21, 1772, led by Justice John Munro, Baker was seriously injured and captured. A rescue effort by the Green Mountain Boys intercepted Munro and Baker returned to Vermont after a 24-hour ordeal. During the Revolutionary War, Baker was killed while scouting near Isle aux Noix in Quebec.
