Hectorville Covered Bridge

The Hectorville Covered Bridge, dismantled and placed in storage in 2002, was one of four bridges built in 1883 by Savanard and Sheldon Jewett in Montgomery Village. Lumberman and farmers, the Jewett brothers were prolific in the construction of the Town lattice truss, one of the most significant American truss types. Patented in 1820 by architect Ithiel Town, the truss system consists of a rectangular timber frame connected by sawn planks in a lattice pattern held by trunnels. The 54-foot bridge was moved to Hectorville ca. 1899 to span the south branch of the Trout River, allowing access to a schoolhouse, store, and butter tub factory. The abutments remain south of the concrete bridge as a reminder of historic Hectorville.
