A part of Greene's army was here in February, 1781, just after Cornwallis's pursuit. Here Washington stopped, June 4, 1791, in his tour of the Southern States. Here John Randolph of Roanoke in 1827 made one of his great speeches. Here General Custer camped in April, 1865.
