Settlement of Newport News
The place appears on Captain John Smith's map as Point Hope. In 1621, Sir William Newce, marshal of Virginia, his brother, Captain Thomas Newce, and Daniel Gookin came here from Newcestown, Ireland, and made a settlement. It was known as Newport Newce, later Newport News.
