Westover
Two miles southeast. In 1619 the first settlement was made there; settlers were killed there in the Indian massacre of 1622. In 1666, Theodoric Bland bought Westover; in 1688 it passed to William Byrd. His son, Colonel William Byrd, built the present house about 1730. In January, 1781, Benedict Arnold landed there on his raid to Richmond. In May, 1781, Cornwallis crossed the river there in pursuit of Lafayette.
