Varina and Fort Harrison
At Varina, a short distance south, John Rolfe and Pocahontas lived after their marriage in 1614. The place became the first county seat of Henrico County, and here also was the glebe house of Rev. James Blair, founder of William and Mary College. Under the name of Aiken's Landing, Varina was a point of exchange for prisoners in 1862. Fort Harrison near by was one of the principal works in the Richmond defenses, 1862-64. It was captured on September 29, 1864.
