The Burwell-Morgan Mill

The Burwell-Morgan Mill, built between 1782 and 1785, was the product of a business partnership between Col. Nathaniel Burwell and Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan. Burwell was a member of the Tidewater gentry who had inherited land in this area and later built Carter Hall. Morgan, an officer in the American Revolution, lived nearby at Saratoga. Powered by Spout Run, this commercial gristmill ground local wheat into flour, which was shipped via the Shenandoah River to Harpers Ferry and markets beyond. After the mill ceased operating in 1943, the Clarke County Historical Association restored it and opened it as a museum demonstrating milling practices.
