The Huguenot Settlement
In this vicinity, though mainly on the south side of James River, Huguenot refugees from France settled, 1699-1701 and later. These industrious settlers left an enduring mark on the community. Manakin is a corruption of the name of the Monacan Indian tribe, which once occupied this region.
