Seven miles south once stood Dungeness, built about 1730 by Isham Randolph (1685-1742) who was the grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States, and of James Pleasants, Governor of Virginia. Sea captain, merchant and planter, Randolph also served as Virginia's agent in London and Adjutant General of the Colony.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.
