About 1/4 mile south is the site of Ebenezer Academy, one of the first Methodist schools in the United States. The Rev. Francis Asbury, circuit-riding bishop and driving force behind the growth of Methodism in America, joined local church leaders at the home of the Rev. Edward Dromgoole, one of American Methodism’s most influential early preachers, to write a constitution for the academy in Dec. 1792. The school was housed in a stone building on about 50 acres of land. Ebenezer’s affiliation with Methodism had ceased by 1809, but it remained a significant regional educational institution before closing in the mid-19th century.
