The Servants ' Plot
On this Poropotank Creek, in 1663, the indentured servants of Gloucester County, weary of their hard lot, plotted an insurrection. The plot was matured, but it was betrayed by one Birkenhead, a servant at Purton, who thereby probably prevented a massacre. He was freed and given a present of tobacco. Mary Johnston's novel, "Prisoners of Hope", uses this incident.
