Historic Port Conway
Six miles southeast is Port Conway on the Rappahannock. At the Conway place there, James Madison, fourth President of the United States, was born, 1751. There Kilpatrick's Union cavalry shelled two gunboats captured by the Confederates, September 1, 1863. There John Wilkes Booth, assassin of Lincoln, crossed the river, April 24, 1865.
