Fluvanna County Courthouse

Fluvanna County was formed from part of Albemarle County in 1777. The county seat was established about a mile south of here, on the opposite side of the Rivanna River, in 1778. Voters elected to move the seat to Palmyra in 1828. John Hartwell Cocke, of Bremo in southern Fluvanna County, is credited with designing the Greek Revival courthouse here, which was completed in 1831. The Rev. Walker Timberlake, a Methodist minister, oversaw construction. Cocke also prepared the plans for the stone jail, built in 1828. A busy village emerged around the public buildings in the mid-19th century. A new courthouse opened in 2001.
