Lafayette and Cornwallis
Lafayette, commanding an American force, crossed this river a few miles west, May 30, 1781. Cornwallis, the British commander, who had followed him from the James River, near here gave up the pursuit, June 1, and turned westward. Lafayette moved on to the Rapidan River, where he was joined by "Mad Anthony" Wayne.
