Mercer's Home
Aldie was the home of Charles Fenton Mercer (born, 1778, died, 1858), liberal statesman. Mercer was a Congressman and member of the Virginia convention of 1829-30, in which he advocated manhood suffrage. His attempt to establish a free school system in Virginia nearly succeeded, 1817. He was a leading advocate of the colonization of free negroes in Liberia. 101-2
