In 1826, about two miles from here, the Reverend Howell Taylor and John Williams with their families established the Tabernacle Community. With Barcrofts, Curries, and others, they built Tabernacle Methodist Church and Haywood County's first schoolhouse. As of 2025 this community still gathers here annually for the tabernacle Kinfolks Camp Meeting, which attracts hundreds of people. The Taylors began camp meeting about 1780 in Virginia and are still determined to continue this tradition to the remotest generation. "... the Taylors still worship in the house of their fathers."

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
