In 1950, after a former high school burned, the Crockett County Court approved a $100,000 bond to build a new brick Central High School for African American students. Eugene D. Brown, the school's principal from 1937 to 1959, added the Home Economics Department, Commerce Training, and Cosmetology. He also appointed a band director. In 1959 Burnell W. Simmons became principal. A 1960 expansion of the building led Simmons to introduce many innovative and progressive changes to course offerings. Desegregation of Crockett County schools led to Central's closing in 1970. The school was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2025.
