On December 15, 1870, in Jackson, the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was organized by the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The first official CME Church, "Mother Liberty," which stood one block west, was razed by fire in the late 1800's. In 1893 the church was relocated to its present site. In 1954 the Colored Methodist Church became the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
