Public Schools in McKenzie date back to 1867, but a local school board was not organized until July 30, 1903, with $1,500 funding. Two years later construction began on the first McKenzie High School, which opened here in 1906. From 1924 to 1997 two other buildings on Woodrow Avenue were used for McKenzie High School. The first African American students enrolled in 1965, and in 1966 Webb High School, the only high school for African Americans in Carroll County, merged with McKenzie. Elementary and junior high schools were located here from 1906 to 1997. McKenzie High alumni have proudly made an impact on Tennessee and around the world.
