Alabama - Derived from Creek Indians phrase meaning "Here we rest." In the early 1700s, several Spanish expeditions visited the State; in 1702 the French founded Mobile and settled near Tallapoosa. Alabama became a territory in 1807, a state in 1819. Montgomery was also the first capital of the Confederacy. Giles County - Established 1809, named in honor of Senator William G. Giles of Virginia. One of the strongest advocated for the admission of Tennessee to the Union, he served in U. S. Senate from 1804 to 1815 and was Governor of Virginia, 1827-30.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.
