In 1915, the Humphreys County Board of Education acquired five acres of land, including this site, from the City of Waverly to construct a grammar school for African Americans. Waverly Colored Elementary School was re-named Porch-Reed School in 1946, honoring teachers Mattie Barr Porch and Myrtle Reed. A high school was added later, and the first class to graduate was in 1958. Porch-Reed School closed five years later to integrate with Waverly Central, High School.
